The Continuous Tense
It all started with a WhatsApp status that triggered a conversation with my good friend Kumi. I had concealed my vicarious lament for Germany’s unprecedented demise in the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a funny comment that earned his laughter. Beyond the laughter was a lesson worth sharing – “Hmm, I have learnt a lesson about success and successful people. The greatest work isn’t about being successful but sustaining the success.” Kumi messaged.
Creation is an expression of the very nature and personality of God; His all sufficiency and never deficient arsenal translated in the continuous purposeful sustenance of life. Whether it’s having some herrings jollof for dinner or sipping some coconut water by the road side or even just enjoying some shade under a mahogany tree, the testimony of the consistent and everlasting nature of God permeating every endeavour of life is so glaring. Have you ever thought of how long the sea has produced fish? Or considered the magnitude of the enormously diverse secondary and tertiary products derived from the primary source of nature across cultures for everyday life?
David in the first four verses of the nineteenth psalm speaks so aptly to this: “The heavens declare the glory of God. And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.” Every seed of life, conspicuous and inconspicuous since the inception of the universe continually shares its treasure. It’s as simple as this; as long as the earth remains, seed time and harvest will remain. A proper diagnosis of nature will make anyone appreciate the proficiency of the ordinary. Humanity is the highest reflection of God in form and likeliness, with the sole mandate of stewardship over creation. It’s never been God’s intention to leave anyone in a complacent state of accomplishment or success. The Omniscient in His infinite wisdom takes time to prepare us not only to be blessed but also to be a blessing; to live in a continuous/progressive state of growth, relevance and impact. Each day is an opportunity to be a blessing!
Throughout scripture God takes people through vigorous preparations but uses very little, seemingly insignificant happenings to turn their destinies around. It reveals the truth that when success precedes character, failure is inevitable but the reverse always produces longevity. The Lord prepares to build capacity and cause to manifestation the fullest expression of himself. God’s original mandate to be fruitful and multiply and subdue and have dominion hasn’t changed. All the blessings outlined in God’s precepts may remain wishful but it is your choice to make them experiential and a reality. Through the continuous tense of life, choose to experience the blessings of the Lord. Choose to be a blessing.
